You need to make a website. Like now. Where do you start? Do you hire someone? Is DIY more your thing? As a photographer, I've needed a place to showcase my work since day one. I've tried a few different platforms and several attempts. I've finally come to a resting place where I think my work and business needs to hang out online. Till the next big thing of course. Ha!
I really do love using Squarespace for all of my needs. This is in no way a sponsored post and even if it was, I would fully support it because you have no idea how many times I've gotten up on my soapbox and told others what I think about it. I thought that I would break down all the reasons why I love using it and why it can be very useful for your business too!
Geared Toward Mobile Friendliness (Responsive)
About 80% of your viewers (hopefully clients!) will attempt to view your website from their phone. It's just the way it is. You HAVE to ensure that your website is easy to read and doesn't require people to pinch and drag your page so that they can read the tiny text. It's just annoying. One thing that you will find with Squarespace templates is that they all may seem similar and kind of restrictive. One of the reasons for this is that they were strategically designed to fit your phone and allow for ease of use. With other platforms you have to either find a template that is mobile friendly or you have to use a separate service to ensure that everything is responsive. It is rather appealing to have a variety of layouts, but don't let them deceive you. Squarespace is just thinking ahead and providing you with what is actually being used efficiently. You can do a whole lot to customize your website in Squarespace, you just have to get a bit more creative or reach out to a designer.
Set Up To Support SEO
What is SEO? It stands for search engine optimization. It works to rank your website more or less visible in search engines like Google and Safari. Search engines are constantly figuring out what people are searching for and so they will look for websites that are legit, functioning well, and provide the information desired. Squarespace works in the background of your website to ensure that everything is in order. All the code must be clean and information sorted so that search engines can find things with ease. All that is left is for you to work on your end of SEO, like including the keywords and links. Another factor that Squarespace works to keep running smoothy is load time. Have you ever gone to a site and canceled out of it because it just wouldn't load fast enough. On other platforms, there are themes that are pretty hefty in size and functionality. You end up having to download a plugin to speed the load time up.
Super Easy To Use & Plenty Of Free Tutorials
After working with Wordpress for a while and having to troubleshoot a lot of layouts, switching over to Squarespace was so refreshing! I found it to be valuable to learn about how websites are laid out, but at the same time, it saved me so much time knowing that Squarespace was doing all the grunt work that Wordpress made me do. Yes, it is restrictive to some extent, but only because of how many different devices we use. Within these limits, you can pretty much put things wherever you want with ease. If you enjoy working on customizing the themes yourself, Squarespace has a huge library of written tutorials and videos to guide you. You don't have to search through a million threads in a forum to find the right answer (they definitely are there if you want to dig deeper into developing a website). You have a centralized place to go for help. Even if a designer customizes your site, you don't have to freak out after launch day wondering what to do when you need to upload a new product or information. Even the simplest task is answered in their help center and editing is pretty user friendly.
The Look is Clean & Modern
With all the information overload we have these days, viewing a site created within Squarespace can be a breath of fresh air. The look is fresh, clean and modern giving your business an edge. With the introductiion of the digital age, clients want to not only know that you have a website for your business, they want to know that it is alive and well. What does that look like? It is a website that is easy to use, functions well on their phones, and looks modern. This doesn't necessarily mean that your style needs to be modern, though! While keeping that modern feel, you can create content for your site that fits well with your personal brand.
It's An All In One Package
One of the things that I absolutely LOVE about Squarespace, is the fact that everything I need to have a well functioning and secure website, can be made through at least one purchase. Other than the domain name (which sometimes can come from another source), everything that you would need to get started is in the most basic package. It offers SSL certificates to protect your domain name, hosting, an editing platform, tutorials (as mentioned above), templates, and protection from all those pesky spammers and hackers. When using other platforms, things might start out super cheap or even free but then you start realizing there are other things you need for your site and those purchases start adding up. It gets kind of overwhelming and frankly, annoying. All you do is pay for one service either once a month or once a year. Straight forward, without hidden fees, just the way I like it!
